The Shougang Group’s Research Institute of Technology was founded in 1960 and formerly known as the Shougang Iron and Steel Research Institute. In 1995, it was recognized as a national enterprise technology center by the State Economic and Trade Commission, State Administration of Taxation and General Administration of Customs. After 63 years of continuous efforts and hard work, the Research Institute of Technology has now become the organization and management center, R&D promotion center and high-quality personnel training and transportation base of Shougang's scientific and technological innovation, providing important scientific and technological support for Shougang’s transformation, development and innovation progress.
The Research Institute of Technology is mainly responsible for research on the development and applications of new products, technologies, processes and materials in Shougang. It has the ability to simulate and optimize the whole process of steel production, from optimizing the proportion of raw fuel before iron making to smelting, hot rolling, cold rolling, annealing, galvanizing and user technology development. It has a world-class metallurgical material inspection and test center that supports product development and process research in many places, including 120 laboratories and 603 sets of testing equipment. The analysis and detection ability has been extended from result detection to process detection. The microanalysis capability of chemical components of iron and steel has reached the ppb level and the scale of micro-analysis has reached 0.23 nm. It has gained laboratory accreditation of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) and has always been among the best in the evaluation of national enterprise technology centers.
The Research Institute of Technology is committed to the exploration and practice of innovation systems, and strives to create an innovative R&D system featuring "one institute with multiple centers" and an efficient collaborative mode of "integrated production, marketing and research". Focusing on excellent scientific and technological resources at home and abroad, it has opened up and cooperated with more than 70 universities, research institutes and users at home and abroad through the establishment of different types of cooperation platforms.
The Research Institute of Technology adheres to the strategy of strengthening enterprises with talents and holds fast to the development concept of "respecting labor, knowledge, talents and creation" to strengthen the construction of the talent team. As the highland of scientific and technological talents of the Shougang Group, it has gathered a group of highly educated and high-quality innovative talents. It has more than 500 on-the-job employees, including more than 130 doctors and more than 240 masters, accounting for about 75% of the total.
Since the "14th Five-year Plan" was put forward, the Shougang Group has won 68 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards, among which eight achievements including "Development and Application of Key Technologies for the Continuous Casting of High Aluminum Steel and Micro-alloyed Steel Slabs" won the first prize in metallurgical science and technology, and "Integration and Innovation of Key Technologies in the Manufacturing and Application of High-safety Steel for Body Structures" and another two achievements won the first prize at the Beijing Science and Technology Awards. Shougang has had 3,311 successful patent applications, of which 1,633 were for inventions, and 2,724 granted patents, of which 899 were invention patents. The Shougang Group has been named a "National Intellectual Property Demonstration Enterprise" and "Beijing Intellectual Property Demonstration Unit". Shougang has also presided over and participated in the revision of 170 standards, of which nine were international standards.
In 2022, all the cadres and workers of the Research Institute of Technology maintained their strategic concentration and worked hard to achieve their goals and tasks throughout the year in the face of the shocking impact of the epidemic and the unexpected market downturn. It successfully achieved seven launched products and one created process. It won 16 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, of which five were first prizes. It obtained 141 scientific and technological achievements, of which 25 were advanced in the world and above the advanced level in the world. It was granted 407 invention patents, ranked second in the ranking list of "2022 China Iron and Steel Enterprises with Patent Innovation Indexes" and was named the "Enterprise with the Strongest Patent Innovation". It formulated and revised 93 standards, including three international standards, and Cold-Rolled Oriented Electrical Steel and Continuously Hot-Rolled Steel Plate and Strip for Structure were appraised as the "Leaders" of enterprise standards. Many advanced models emerged in the workforce, showing great vitality. Qinggele Jirigele was awarded the "National May Day Labor Medal" and named "National March Eighth Red Flag Bearer", and was elected as the representative of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Ji Chenxi was named "Learning Star of Citizens in Capital", four people were hired as Shougang scientists, and the Research Institute of Technology was named an Advanced Unit of Shougang. The steel team in the construction of the Winter Olympic Games venues was named "Outstanding Contribution Collective of Shougang Winter Olympic Service Guarantee". Five employees went down to the front line of the community for epidemic prevention and received pennants and thank-you letters. Six young volunteers successfully completed the service guarantee work for major events such as the Winter Olympics, demonstrating the great spirit of selfless dedication and extraordinary responsibility of scientific and technological workers.
2023 is the first year to fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The Research Institute of Technology will closely follow the guiding ideology and overall goals of the Shougang Group's "14th Five-year Plan" for technological innovation. It will adhere to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as the guide, accurately implement the new development concepts in an all-round way, and consolidate Shougang's high-quality development foundations. It will focus on efficient, high-quality, green and intelligent manufacturing in order to continuously tap into potential, increase efficiency and accelerate the promotion of technology leadership, thereby becoming Shougang's core competitiveness with the goal of extreme efficiency, extremely low cost, excellent configuration and extremely stable quality as the starting point. It will provide innovative support for Shougang to build a large-scale world-class comprehensive enterprise group.
