Formerly known as the "Guiyang Iron and Steel Factory", Shougang Guiyang Special Steel Co., Ltd. ("Shougang Guiyang Special Steel") was founded in 1958. On September 12th, 1958, it produced the first round steel unit with a diameter of 24 mm. In the 1960s, Guiyang Special Steel changed from producing ordinary carbon steel to producing high-quality special steel, realizing the transformation of its product structure and quality. To date, it has a history of more than 60 years producing excellent special steel. In July 2009, Shougang reorganized Guiyang Special Steel and built a new "Industrial Base for the Circular Economy of New Special Materials" in Zhazuo Town of Xiuwen County, Guiyang City by implementing the urban steel mill relocation project. In January 2016, all the old factories of Guiyang Special Steel were shut down and relocated. In July 2016, all the short processes in the new district were completed and went into production, forming an annual output capacity of 500,000 tons of special steel and 700,000 tons of special rolled steel.

The main equipment of Shougang Guiyang Special Steel includes a 60-ton Consteel electric arc furnace, 60-ton ladle refining furnace, 60-ton vacuum refining furnace, one hollow steel production line and one high-speed high-quality wire rolling production line, as well as one 3,000-ton forging hammer and one 800-ton forging hammer. It possesses the most advanced electric furnace steelmaking production lines in the world and the most advanced steel rolling, forging and brazing production lines in China. It is an important production and scientific research base of brazing steel tools for rock drilling in China and a special steel enterprise with regional characteristics.

Shougang Guiyang Special Steel adheres to the strategy of developing enterprises through science and technology, strengthens its product R&D and continuously enhances its core competitiveness. Its variety structure has developed into 13 product series, including free-cutting steel, rail transit steel, brazing steel tools, welding steel, military steel, fastener steel, petrochemical steel, tool and mold steel, and bearing steel. Its products are mainly used in construction machinery, rail transit, automobiles, tools and molds, metal welding and other industries. Among them, the independently developed axle steel obtained CRCC certification for China Railway's DMU axle and HPQ certification from Deutsche Bahn (DB), and is adopted by the "Shen 24" ultra-high power electric locomotive and 4,000-m plateau electric locomotive HXD1C. Many kinds of Shougang Guiyang Special Steel’s brazing steel tools are exported. In addition, five newly developed varieties have been launched in China, including tellurium-containing and high-carbon free-cutting steel.

In recent years, Shougang Guiyang Special Steel has adhered to green development and continuously enhanced its competitive strength. In 2018, it was evaluated as an "Environmental Protection and Integrity Enterprise" by the Guizhou Provincial Department of the Ecological Environment. In 2019, the company’s application for the IATF16949 Quality System certification was approved by IAOB; it passed the supervision and audit of the ISO22163 quality management system; it completed ISO9001 re-certification; and it passed the supervision and audit of its energy system by CCSC. In 2020, the company obtained the certification of Bureau Veritas (BV); entered the lists of high-tech enterprises in Guizhou Province and construction enterprises for the green manufacturing system in Guizhou Province; and won the title of "Green Factory" in Guizhou Province. In October 2020, it was selected for inclusion in the list of the fifth batch of "Green Manufacturers" of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and became a "National Green Factory". In 2021, it obtained HPQ certification from DB.

In 2022, facing the severe external market, COVID-19, power rationing and other factors, all the cadres and workers of Shougang Guiyang Special Steel unified their minds, gathered a consensus and overcame difficulties. The year-on-year operating income and sales volume in overseas markets increased by 1.93 times and 34% respectively. The sales volume of high value-added heavy brazing products exceeded 100,000; the Development and Application Practice of Green and Efficient Production of High-quality Free-cutting Steel Project won the third prize at the 2022 Guizhou Science and Technology Awards; and the company passed the GJB9001C system certification for the first time and passed the national qualification certification for high-tech enterprises again. It was also evaluated as an A-level "Environmental Protection Integrity Enterprise" by the Guizhou Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment for the third consecutive year, and evaluated as a five-star enterprise that fulfilled its social responsibility in Guizhou Province in 2022.
