Founded in 1946 as Guxian Iron Factory, Shougang Changzhi Steel & Iron Co., Ltd. (“Changzhi Steel & Iron”) was the first iron and steel enterprise to be built by the Communist Party of China at Taihang Mountain Revolution Base. When Prime Minister Zhou Enlai inspected Shanxi in 1956, he said, "Guxian Iron Factory is the first factory officially built by our party at the base, and it was built industriously and thriftily through self-reliance." In 2009, it was jointly reorganized with the Shougang Group.

Changzhi Steel & Iron is located at the junction of Shanxi Province, Hebei Province and Henan Province. The local transportation conditions are convenient as the Taiyuan-Jiaozuo Railway, Handan-Changzhi Railway, Expressway G55, Expressway G22, Highway 207, Highway 208, Highway 309 and Changzhi-Handan Highway run through the north, south, west and east; and as Changzhi has the second largest airport in Shanxi Province, many routes have been opened to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other regions. Integrating mining (coal, limestone, etc.), coking, ironmaking, steelmaking, rolled materials, cement manufacturing, engineering construction and forging machinery manufacturing, Changzhi Steel & Iron enjoys good conditions for the development of the steel and iron industry with coal reserves of 24.3 billion tons, proven iron ore reserves of 140 million tons, proven limestone reserves of 500 million tons, proven dolomite reserves of 60 million tons and 1.5 times the per capita water resources in Shanxi. Far from the urban area, Changzhi Steel & Iron is located downwind of the local dominant wind direction in a superior geographical position. Changzhi Steel & Iron also established Shanxi Changqin Coal Industry Co., Ltd. as a joint venture with the Shanxi Qinxin Coal Coke Group.

Changzhi Steel & Iron has been rated as an "AAA" enterprise in quality credit, an enterprise that "abides by contracts and keeps promises" and an excellent unit in national enterprise culture construction for many consecutive years. As one of the main drafting units of the latest edition of the National Standard for Hot-rolled Ribbed Steel Bars for Reinforced Concrete, it was awarded the "National May Day Labor Award" by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. In 2013, it was named an Advanced Collective of Energy Conservation in Shanxi Province; from 2013 to 2022, it has been ranked among the Top 100 Enterprises in Shanxi Province and Top 100 Manufacturing Enterprises in Shanxi Province; and from 2016 to date, it has been named a Meritorious Enterprise in Shanxi Province. In 2022, it was rated as a "Green Factory" enterprise by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and won honors such as "Construction Steel Quality Brand Demonstration Base". Changzhi Steel & Iron's Construction and Implementation of “Three Clear” and “Three In-place” Post Responsibility System won the first prize for the management innovation achievements of state-owned enterprises in China; its Innovation and Practice of Changzhi Steel & Iron's “Construction of ‘Three Systems’ to Deepen ‘Learning from BSE and Promoting Development’” was rated as a “Benchmarking Transformation Achievement” of management innovation by the Shougang Group; and its Application and Practice of Internal Risk Control Based on the Post Responsibility System and Construction of “Three Systems” to Deepen “Learning from BSE and Promoting Development” won the first prize for Shougang’s management and innovation achievements.

Changzhi Steel & Iron's products include three series, namely iron and steel products, forging machinery and slag cement. It is committed to the R&D of high-strength steel bars and other high-quality steel, and has developed and produced high-value-added products such as high-strength mine anchor steel, hard wire steel, spring steel, high-quality carbon structural steel, welding steel, cold heading steel, high-strength steel bars, weathering steel bars and structural alloy steel. The steel made by Changzhi Steel & Iron is pure and stable in composition. Its leading product, "Shangdang" hot rolled ribbed steel bars, have won honors such as the “Golden Cup Award for Physical Quality among National Metallurgical Products”, "National Inspection-free Product" and “National Customer Satisfaction Product”, and has been adopted by many key construction projects such as Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Beijing Olympic Stadium, Qinghai-Tibet Railway, Shenzhen Bay Cross-sea Bridge, Qinshan Nuclear Power Station, Taiyuan-Jiaozuo High-Speed Railway, Zhengzhou-Taiyuan High-speed Railway, Changzhi-Linfen Expressway, Yangcheng-Manghe Expressway and Taiyuan Rail Transit.

Based on its great progress in basic management, safety and environmental protection, green development, product R&D and per capita labor productivity during the 13th Five-year Plan period, Changzhi Steel & Iron will focus on the "3+2" high-quality development strategy of the Shougang Group during the 14th Five-year Plan period, lay a good foundation for high-quality development in the first three years, and promote the transformation of development quality in the next two years. The key points include strengthening and improving the scale of 3 million tons of steel, and forming a product structure mainly based on steel bar products and supplemented by coal mine steel, section steel, fastener steel, welding steel and welded wire steel; promoting safe and green development, and forming a relatively complete and safe environmental protection and energy management and control system; further improving labor efficiency and raising the physical labor productivity of the main steel industry to the industry level; promoting the improvement of all employees and forming a talent team that matches high-quality development; improving the level of intelligent manufacturing and promoting the construction of "industrialized and informationized" projects in an orderly manner; and promoting the further improvement of operation quality, shaping the embryonic form of strategic transformation in the product structure, making the management and control system more scientific and standardized, making the innovation system more dynamic, and clarifying the transformation and development direction. This will enable Changzhi Steel & Iron to become an iron and steel enterprise with great regional competitiveness in the central and western regions.
