Recently, Shougang successfully supplied medium plate hydropower steel products to the Hebei Shangyi Pumped Storage Power Station Project.

The Hebei Shangyi Pumped Storage Power Station Project has a total investment amount of nearly RMB 10 billion and an installed capacity of 1,400 MW. It is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2026. Upon completion, it will undertake the tasks of peak regulation, valley filling, frequency modulation, phase modulation and emergency backup for the State Grid, help to ensure the safety of the power supply in Beijing and strengthen the rapid response capability, safety, reliability and operating economy of the power grid.

As professional technicians from the Shougang Research Institute of Technology explained, “According to the requirements of the national ‘14th Five-year’ Plan and ‘dual carbon’ goals, the construction scale of pumped storage will reach 120 million kW by 2030. It quickly “tailor-made” the first batch of test plates for the project with high quality and won the trust of the customers, thereby successfully winning the bidding for the Hebei Shangyi Pumped Storage Power Station Medium Plate Supply Project and becoming the exclusive supplier.

Hydropower steel has such characteristics as high strength and low welding crack sensitivity, and the products supplied this time had high production requirements. Zhang Yuefei, a product development professional in the medium plate room of Shougang Jingtang’s Manufacturing Department, said, “In order to ensure that the steel plates had good welding performance, we adopted new ideas for the quality design, but at the same time, the difficulty of their production was greatly increased.” After many quenching heat treatment tests, the product R&D personnel of the Manufacturing Department and Technology Center determined the optimal quenching process parameters and obtained good mechanical properties.

In the production and supply guarantee process, the Medium Plate Division gave full play to its technical advantages and refined the organization of rolling, heat treatment and other links. This enabled the steel plates to reach the best matching of strength and toughness, ensured uniform performance, solved problems such as unstable performance in the mass production process and guaranteed a 100% qualified product rate with the close tracking of technicians and the complete cooperation of workers on the production line. All technical standards fully met the customer’s requirements, and the comprehensive performance reached the domestic advanced level.
